Across Europe, schools and educators are increasingly embracing ocean and water literacy, from hands-on science projects to sustainability programmes and community engagement. To support and connect these efforts, the BlueLightS project and its partners have developed the European Blue Education Framework: a shared reference point to strengthen Blue Education across countries, curricula, and education systems.

This webinar officially launches the draft Framework, presenting its core principles, structure, and purpose. It also opens a dialogue with leading education actors whose insights will help refine the Framework ahead of its wider release. The discussion will also set the stage for the upcoming thematic webinars on national strategies, curricula, teacher training, and educational resources.

Objectives:

  • Present the purpose, scope, and structure of the new European Blue Education Framework.

  • Explore how a shared Framework can support collaboration across Europe.

  • Gather recommendations from key actors to strengthen the Framework before publication.

The panel who will help frame why a shared European approach to blue education matters, and how it can support educators, institutions, and policymakers alike include:

🔹 Tremeur Denigot - former lead of the Education for Climate Coalition, sharing insights on how frameworks can support long-term transformation across education systems

🔹 Katerina Ananiadou - UNESCO, leading the Greening Education Partnership, connecting global education agendas with sustainability action

🔹 Sophia Queckenberg - DG EAC, European Commission, focusing on sustainability education at EU level

🔹 Cassie Hague - Analyst at the OECD - OCDE’s Centre for Education Research and Innovation (CERI), bringing an evidence-based perspective on education change
