The Mission Ocean, "Restore Our Ocean and Waters by 2030" aims to reverse the damage to our ocean, coast and inland waters caused by human activities. To achieve this, it is crucial to foster ocean and water literacy and raise responsible and empowered future generations.

BlueLightS funds schools through calls to launch blue projects and bring the blue into classrooms, with the aim of enhancing ocean and water literacy. Their second open call for funding is in progress, which an application deadline of 30 September.

By starting a blue project in your school, you will not only help your students gain a deeper understanding of aquatic environments; you can also join the Network of European Blue Schools (NEBS) and earn the prestigious European Blue School label!

This European Network is part of the #EU4OceanCoalition for Ocean Literacy, which connects organizations, projects and individuals committed to sustainable ocean management.

BLUE-LIGHS Objectives

  • To create a one-stop knowledge hub centralizing blue education resources for all actors of the education system;

  • To create a dynamic ‘blue education platform’ to share, discuss and grow the blue education community;

  • To support the development of a robust network of European Blue Schools;

  • To test methods for mainstreaming blue education in nine European countries;

  • To develop a framework recommending which conditions must be met to allow teachers across Europe to bring the blue into their classrooms, thereby shifting responsibility away from teachers and onto the education system as a whole;

  • To use these opportunities to increase the visibility of blue education resources and mainstream their integration into the European education system.
