#Interreg's Policy Learning Platform webinar on river restoration, is the first of a series on nature and biodiversity. River restoration refers to a large variety of ecological, physical, spatial and management measures aimed at restoring the natural state and functioning of the river system.
Examples include the removal of artificial barriers, as well as the restoration of oxbow lakes and riparian vegetation. River restoration can positively impact a wide range of environmental objectives including biodiversity, flood protection and water quality, and can also create new opportunities for recreation and tourism.
The EU considers river restoration an important tool to help achieve the objectives of the Water Framework Directive and the EU Birds and Habitats Directives. To this end, the EU Biodiversity Strategy includes a commitment to restore at least 25,000 km of rivers to a free-flowing state by 2030 by removing obsolete barriers and restoring floodplains and wetlands, which is being implemented through the Nature Restoration Regulation and National Restoration Plans.
